Student Bill of Responsibilities and Rights Event Ideas
Build Understanding
As you work on building your coaltion and engaging your campus community in the drafting process, some ways to educate people on what the SBRR is and why it is important include:
- Short video interviews with classmates, teachers, staff, etc. about what they think is going well and what needs to be improved on campus. Use these videos on social media and in your advocacy meetings with decision-makers.
- Lunch time trivia table to talk about human rights and find out which human rights your community identifies as upheld or violated on campus
- Classroom presentations to introduce the idea of a SBRR
Survey Campus
Some activities to get the “Taking the Human Rights Temperature of Your School” survey completed by everyone on campus will be easier than others depending on the level of support you have from your administrators:
- Admin distributes to all students, teachers, staff, parents (if applicable) and shares results with the SBRR drafting group
- Advisory class/Homeroom with support from students in your coalition
- In-class presentations partnering with a group of teachers in a subject that all students take
- All school assemblies
- Members of your coalition use their platforms to get people to respond
- Table at lunch to survey whoever comes up to speak with you
Implement and Distribute
After your SBRR is drafted and approved by decision-makers, everyone on campus will need to know what their responsibilities and rights are, as well as how to uphold them. Some ways to do this include:
- All school assembly to explain the implemetnation process and contents of the SBRR
- Poster that goes in every classroom and office listing all articles in your SBRR
- Classroom presentations
- Informational video that plays on campus announcements
- Campus newspaper article
- Embed in the orientation packet and as part of orientation at the start of each school year
