February 10 – February 27, 2025: STFers across chapters are turning advocacy into action, educating their peers, and building coalitions to amplify their impact. Through in-class presentations, film screenings, and panel discussions, students are deepening their understanding of the criminalization of the unhoused and encouraging their campus communities to take a stand.

February 10, 2025: Ánimo Venice STFers educated their campus about the Protect the Unhoused Action Plan by screening Swept for four ninth-grade classes. Following the film, STFers led in-class presentations, guiding discussions on key vocabulary, statistics, and ways to take action. Students deepened their engagement by answering film discussion questions and brainstorming advocacy opportunities within their own communities.

February 19, 2025: STFers at Mira Costa HS demonstrated the power of coalition building by partnering with Hope4Hygiene, a campus club that assembles and donates hygiene kits for the unhoused in Los Angeles. During the meeting, STF leaders screened Swept, collected petition signatures to decriminalize city-wide policies affecting the unhoused, and added personalized notes to the hygiene kits. February 27, 2025: Housing activists Sonja Verdugo, Joanna Swan, Adam Silver and John Raphling spoke to more than 230 students at Alain LeRoy Locke College Preparatory Academy. Throughout the day, participants learned about encampment sweeps and the criminalization tactics Los Angeles officials use to hide the city’s growing unhoused population. After watching the “Swept” documentary by guest speaker Adam Silver, all panelists shared personal stories and advocacy opportunities during a Q&A. Attendees also took action by signing a petition to LA Mayor Karen Bass. Photo by Brayan A.
