Please meet Angel A., Event Coordinator at Carson High School. Continue reading to learn about how Angel has taken the lead on advocating to transition Carson HS to 100% renewable energy.

Name: Angel A.

School: Carson HS

Graduation Year: 2026

STF Title: Event Coordinator

STF Member Since: Nov. 2023

STF Team: What leadership skills do you feel like you have developed since joining STF?

Angel: I am more confident in public speaking. The tent event we hosted allowed me to figure out ways to make people care about human rights topics. It makes it easier to speak on these issues, the more we learn about them. Now I know how to ask for help from teachers and I can see what it takes to organize and achieve change.

STF Team: Since 2021, Carson HS STFers have been advocating to transition their campus to 100% renewable energy. Now, the baton has been passed to you to lead this initiative and collaborate with STF alumnus, Uchenna A. and LAUSD Board Member Tanya Ortiz Franklin. What inspired you to take the lead on this?

Angel: I was a new student at the time and seeking leadership roles. I’ve never had an opportunity like this and wanted to take it because it would help the environment, get our school funding for renewable energy, and make an impact at Carson HS.

STF Team: What are you doing to maintain your relationship with the LAUSD board member, Tanya Ortiz Franklin?

Angel: We will schedule a follow-up meeting. The first round of schools will transition to 100% renewable energy around January. We want to make sure that Carson is included in the next round of schools, so Uchenna and I will be reaching out around then. We have already prepared questions and next steps to discuss with Ms. Ortiz Franklin.

STF Team: How has it been working with an STF alumnus on this?

Angel: Uchenna is somebody I look up to and goes to the college I want to go to. He has been very kind and welcoming as soon as I stepped onto the project. He knew how to explain what has been done so far in a way that makes sense to me, so it was easy to transition into this project. Before we met with a representative from LAUSD, Uchenna met with me and gave me advice. He has served as a mentor and inspired me to be better. I would like to stay connected with him as I move forward and think about colleges.

STF Team: What are some of your greatest takeaways from STF so far?

Angel: STF helped me gain knowledge on issues that are happening in today’s world. Students can be negligent to what is going on. I think about the situations going on around the world and not just problems confined to what’s happening at school. I want students to know that if they want to bring change or be a voice for any issue, please consider joining STF.
