August 6, 2024: STF leaders from Harvard-Westlake and Palisades Charter HS met with Congressman Brad Sherman’s policy advisor, John Alford. Delivering more than 600 petition signatures, STFers discussed the need for Congressman Sherman to do more to protect the human rights of asylum seekers and end the use of deadly deterrence policies. Mr. Alford expressed the Congressman’s support of our efforts, sharing that Brad Sherman recently shut down a detainee center that unfairly held many undocumented people.

During the Q&A, Mr. Alford asked what Congressman Sherman could do help? STFers asked that he support legislation like HR2374: New Way Forward Act, which would solve some of the problems related to “prevention through deterrence” tactics. They also encouraged the Congressman to support the Department of Homeland Security’s investigation into human rights abuses, discrimination, and violence associated with the CBP One App.

Additionally, STFers noted that resources available for immigrants on Congressman Sherman’s website were outdated, so Mr. Alford pledged to talk to ensure the materials are updated.

Congratulations on such a productive meeting!
